The late George Pol. Georghiou, the island's internationally known painter, had a special affection for St. Spyridon, the local shepherd boy who became a bishop and who gained great fame for his eloquence and patronage of the deaf and the paralytic. Georghiou painted his great picture of the saint reclining and resting with his boots off in allusion to St. Spyridon's ability to walk over immense distances in ministering to his flock.
