The village of Mazotos

At Alaminos

' Nearby and close to the sea , there are the remains of a Roman town . It was here that Constantine Kopronymos defeated the fleet of the Calif Yezid III , capturing and destroying the complete fleet of 1,000 ships , except for 3 which were allowed to escape so that they might carry the news of the disaster to their country . In the Middle Ages , Mazotos gave its name to one of the principal baronies of the kingdom , and during the Venetian era it became the capital of one of the 12 districts into which the island was divided .'

Houses such as this one at Alaminos were very much the standard or typical type 30-40 years ago . They are fast becoming a rarity . New materials and changing tastes are rapidly wiping out the original simplicity and local colour .
