The 'Kamares' , Larnaca

The aqueduct known to Larnacans as the Kamares (The Arches) is part of an elaborate and ingenious scheme for the water supply of the town of Larnaca built by Bekir Pasha in 1747 . For its time the project was tremendously ambitious and costly . It involved the digging of no fewer than 300 wells which were inter-connected and three lots of Kamares . Bekir Pasha's aqueduct served Larnaca from 1747 to 1941 . Larnaca now has a modern water supply . Urbanization and rapid expansion have brought Larnaca closer to the Kamares and thus some of their old romance has gone , but they remain a cherished spot , very much part of the landscape , a monument to Bekir Pasha the philanthropist and part of Larnaca's history .
