 As a Village Roads Paymaster and later as an Assistant District Inspector, at the tender age of eighteen, I travelled on a powerful motor-cycle all over the hilly region of Larnaca. I often planned my itinerary so that I could spend the night at Odhou, my favourite village, as a guest of George Chimona, my favourite Mukhtar (Village Headman). As one bringing money to the village I was a popular visitor and naturally I made many good friends. My popularity was enhanced when, at the outbreak of the war, my duties included the payment of allowances to the womenfolk whose husbands had joined the Cyprus Regiment and were serving abroad. My romantic association with this enchanting village came to an end when I joined the Cyprus Volunteer Force....
