Panayia tou Kambou (Our Lady of the Field) Khirokitia

The entrance

Within a short distance from the Neolithic Settlement and to the north-west of the village of Khirokitia lies a small chapel in the fields close to some orange groves. From a woman who came to light the candle of our Blessed Virgin Mary just as I got there, I found out that the chapel is dedicated, appropriately, to Panayia tou Kambou (Our Lady of the Field). The woman, fascinated by my interest in the lovely door and the limestone finial above it, pointed to some ruins nearby and told me that they were part of the palace 'tis Regaenas' (of the Regina). She also pointed to some hills from which 'the Turks' [Saracens] had bombarded the place. I did not want to check the facts. I wanted to go away with the illusion that I had seen, for the first time, the abandoned chapel and the remains of a palace belonging to one of the legendary Reginas of Cyprus.
